He spent 8 years on the payroll and the team, even after losing his 6-year-old son to a tragic forklift accident at the newspaper.  After Cody Avila's hearing started to fail in middle school, the Springfield teenager used to wear hats often to disguise his hearing aids, and then, his cochlear implant. "I was having a hard time dealing with the loss," said Avila, who now has no hearing left. "I thought it would label me as a freak, as different." Several years and a transfer to Missouri School for the Deaf later, he is a thriving student and will be heading to Gallaudet University in the fall.
